The Department of Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology integrates multifaceted disciplines that form the basis of modern research in microbiology, genetics and biotechnology. The Department includes 16 senior staff members and supports a comprehensive program of academic activities such as basic and applied research in microbiology, molecular genetics, and biotechnology.
The Department conducts basic and applied research in the fields of neurodegenerative diseases, microbial infections, systems biology, genome stability, immunotechnology, enzyme technology, tissue engineering, viral evolution and nanobiotechnology. The unifying themes of all these are the discovery of the molecular basis of human diseases, understanding the molecular mechanisms that govern the interactions between organisms and the development of new medical treatments and materials.
Department members have published hundreds of studies in high profile scientific journals and produced numerous patents. The labs are funded by competitive grants from both national and international sources as well as by the industry. The research in the Department is conducted mainly by excellent MSc and PhD students we as well as by Post-doctoral trainees.
