The Conifer Collection
This collection highlights the evolutionary adaptations and specialized biology of gymnosperms in extreme climates.
Defined as gymnosperms – plants with "naked seeds" – conifers are primarily trees widely distributed across vast climatic regions. These species are the hallmark of landscapes characterized by short summers and long, snowy winters.
Their needle-like leaves are structurally designed to prevent heavy snow accumulation, reducing the risk of branch breakage. Additionally, the leaf cells contain dissolved substances that act as a natural antifreeze by lowering the freezing point. During the flowering season, these primarily wind-pollinated trees release vast amounts of pollen into the air, which can often trigger allergic reactions.
