History

Research Interest

My research focuses on the cultural, social and legal aspects of Israel's Austerity regime in the 1950s. I am looking at how women's roles were molded by shortages; I am interested in the role children played in shaping public discourse about shortages, and how law breaking was justified.  Human nutrition is not only constructed by physiological needs but also by cultural  needs. I therefore study the social capital attached to the most desired item of food at that time - meat. Since in the 1950s,  one was thought to be what one ate (or could not afford to eat), I also study the impact of shortages on national identity.

Research Interest

My laboratory is focused on improving yield and quality of crop plants, especially wheat, through the exploitation of beneficial traits from wild germplasm. I believe that an integrated system approach, combining physiological, genetic, genomic and transgenic tools, is required to dissect complex traits and reduce the gap between phenotype and genotype.

Dr. Marcello Ehrlich

Email

marceloe@post.tau.ac.il

Role

PI / Lab Head

Department

Cell Research and Immunology

Research Interest

The Ehrlich laboratory studies the interaction of cells with viruses that attack farm animals. Our research has centered on Orbiviruses such as the Bluetongue virus and the Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease virus, which pose a significant threat to the ovine and bovine farm industries in Israel and Europe. We employ advanced techniques such as quantitative live- and fixed- cell confocal microscopy, reverse genetics, RNAi interference and other cell biology approaches. Our aims are to identify determinants of virulence, characterize cellular processes induced by these viruses and generate clones and reagents for the employment of such knowledge in the design of modified viral clones.

Molecular Microbiology and Biotechnology

Research Interest

Broadly, our research interests revolve around two related topics: 1. The role of lateral (horizontal) gene transfer in the evolution of microorganisms and 2. The study of host-microbe interaction, with particular focus on the human gut microbiome in health and disease. We are interested in fundamental questions in microbial ecology and evolution: What are the factors that drive or limit gene flow between prokaryotic species? Which microbial species can cause chronic diseases?

Plant domestication processes. Using a combination of computational tools with large scale genomics data we hope to gain novel insights into the evolutionary consequences of plant domestication and the evolutionary selection forces that shaped their genomes.
