Prof. Amram Eshel served as the Director of the Botanic Garden from 1988 to 1989. He completed all of his academic studies at Tel Aviv University, where he remained a dedicated researcher until his retirement in 2012.

Research and Environmental Physiology

His research focused on the environmental physiology of plants, with a specific emphasis on plant nutrition and salinity tolerance. Working alongside Professor Yoav Waisel, he was instrumental in the design and operation of the Sarah Racine Root Laboratory, overseeing both the public display laboratory and the advanced research facility.

"The Hidden Half"

Prof. Eshel, together with Yoav Waisel and Uzi Kafkafi, co-edited the first three editions of the seminal textbook Plant Roots: The Hidden Half. This work is recognized by root researchers worldwide as the foundational text for anyone entering the field. He later edited the fourth edition in collaboration with Tom Beeckman from Belgium. The book's title has since become a standard idiom within the scientific community, frequently cited by researchers to describe the complex, often unseen world of plant root systems.
