The Mediterranean Batha Section
A Batha is a plant formation that contains mainly shrublets and herbaceous plants.
The Batha (or Steppe) is an early stage in the line of Succession of the Mediterranean woodland.
The main plant in the Batha is Spiny Burnet (Sarcopoterium spinosum) - a thorny globular shrublet. The Batha is rich with Herbaceous species, including geophytes and Hemicryptophyte Grasses.
A unique trade common for many of the Batha species is spice smell, that can be felt through the air. the smell originates in volatile chemical substances, mostly Essential oils, that many plants produce in order to repel insects and avoid herbivory.
The man learned to use many of these plants for benefits - as food and medicine, and among the known ones are Hyssop (Majorana syriaca), Fringed Rue (Ruta chalepensis) and Thyme-leaved Savory (Satureja thymbra)
