Prof. Tal Dvir Elected Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors
Prof. Tal Dvir

We would like to congratulate Professor Tal Dvir on his election as a Fellow of the prestigious National Academy of Inventors for his research in developing innovative strategies for engineering complex tissues and organs using 3D bioprinting, biomaterials, stem cells, and integrated soft electronics.

Professor Dvir's groundbreaking research, published in 2019, was the first to demonstrate the ability to 3D-print a small-scale human heart with the major blood vessels, all from a patient's own cells and materials. In 2022, the group was the first to show that engineered human spinal cord implants could restore walking ability in mice with chronic paralysis. His lab has also pioneered the development of "cyborg" cardiac patches that integrate living tissues with soft, flexible electronics, enabling remote monitoring and regulation of implanted organ function in vivo.

These technologies are now advancing toward clinical trials, with the first human spinal cord implant approved for compassionate use in Israel. Dvir is a faculty member at the Shmunis School of Biomedicine and Cancer Research, Director of Tel Aviv University's Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, and Founding Director of the Sagol Center for Regenerative Biotechnology.

The National Academy of Inventors is a member organization comprising U.S. and international universities, governmental agencies, and non-profit research institutes, with over 2,500 individual members affiliated with more than 260 institutions worldwide, recognizing academic inventors whose innovations have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and the welfare of society.
