Laying the Foundations for Israeli Innovation: A Meeting of Researchers, Entrepreneurs, and Industry Leaders
In a time when cross-sector collaboration is more critical than ever, Tel Aviv University’s Faculty of Life Sciences brought together minds from academia and industry to spark dialogue, strengthen ties, and shape the future of biotech and innovation in Israel.
In a time marked by complexity and uncertainty, the Faculty of Life Sciences at Tel Aviv University held its second Academia–Industry Dialogue, together with the university’s Industrial Relations – Liaison Office. The timing was intentional: a statement that fostering strong ties between academia and industry is essential for innovation, resilience, and Israel’s global standing.
Held at ANU – Museum of the Jewish People and moderated by Dr. Yariv Wine, the event opened with remarks from TAU President Prof. Ariel Porat and Mr. Hagai Itkin, Chairman of Ramot and TAU Venture. Both emphasized the need to invest in human capital and create favorable conditions to attract Israeli researchers back home.
Leaders behind the Academia–Industry Liaison Initiative
Prof. Marcelo Ehrlich, Vice Dean of the Faculty, outlined three strategic axes of collaboration: the Faculty as a leading research institute, a launchpad for industry-ready graduates, and a platform for practical partnerships such as internships and hackathons.
TAU alumnus Assaf (Assi) Horowitz shared his entrepreneurial journey, followed by guest speaker Asaf Shiloni, who unpacked the process of turning academic innovation into a biotech startup—highlighting timing, teamwork, and the pivot from scientific exploration to real-world implementation.
