The Faculty and the School mourn the passing of our dear colleague and friend Prof. Daniel (Danny) Michaelson
With deep sorrow and a heavy heart, the School of Neurobiology, Biochemistry and Biophysics announce that our dear friend, Prof. Daniel Michaelson, has passed away.
Danny was an extraordinary researcher, an excellent colleague, and a truly special individual. He was an integral part of our department, collaborating professionally with many of us here and with scientists from all over the world.
Danny began his academic journey with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He then continued to pursue his PhD in Biophysics at the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley). Upon his return to Israel in 1975, he joined Tel Aviv University, where he became a Full Professor of Neurobiology in 1988, and directed the Rabin Center for Neurobiology. He also served as a visiting professor at prestigious universities such as Stanford and Yale.
Danny was a great scientist, always with his finger on the pulse of the latest research, and always willing to share his vast knowledge and collaborate. His contributions to the field of Neurobiology and Alzheimer's research were highly significant.
Throughout his career, Danny won many awards, including the Fulbright-Hays Award from the U.S. Department of State, as well as over 30 prestigious research grants from various bodies in Israel and around the world, including Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, the U.S. NIH, and the European Union.
Beyond his professionalism and scientific achievements, we will remember Danny as a warm person, with an illuminating smile and a unique sense of humor. He will be sorely missed by all who had the privilege of working alongside him and calling him a friend.
Danny will always be remembered.
